WSLH Contributes to Research Finding New Bacterium Causing Tick-Borne Illness Ehrlichiosis in WI and MN ROCHESTER, Minn – Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) Communicable Disease Division Deputy Director David Warshauer, Ph.D., is a contributing author on a New England Journal of Medicine article published Aug. 4th detailing the discovery of a new bacterium causing tick-borne Ehrlichiosis in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The new strain of bacteria was identified through DNA testing conducted by Mayo Clinic. According to a Mayo Clinic news release, the investigation began when a medical laboratory technologist at Mayo Clinic Health System's Eau Claire Hospital noted an abnormal Ehrlichia PCR result in 2009 and raised the first red flag. Dr. Warshauer and the WSLH participated in the ensuing Mayo Clinic investigation along with the Wisconsin Division of Public Health, Minnesota Department of Health, Eau Claire City-County Health Department, Burnett County Department of Health and Human Services, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Minnesota, and the CDC.
