WCLN Webinar – The Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network

December 7, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network

Presenters:

  • Timothy Monson, M.S., Supervisor, Communicable Disease Division, Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene
  • David Warshauer, Ph.D., D(ABMM), CDD Deputy Director, Communicable Disease Division, Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene

Description of Session:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently acts as the only sentinel surveillance program for the detection of unusual antibiotic resistance in the United States. The detection, monitoring and reporting of unusual resistance varies greatly among all states, relying almost exclusively upon informed clinicians and laboratorians to recognize and report it. With the creation of a national Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network (ARLN) to improve overall antibiotic resistance surveillance in the U.S., regional laboratories have been established to provide support to clinical, local and state public health laboratories. The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) has been chosen as a regional ARLN laboratory for the Midwest region. This session will describe the ARLN and what roles the WSLH, clinical, local, and state public health labs will play in this national network. Additionally, we will discuss the ARLN resources that are being developed for use in Wisconsin and across the U.S. Finally, we will share some strategies and recommendations for addressing the effects of culture independent diagnostic testing (CIDT) on antibiotic resistance detection and surveillance.

A certificate of participation will be granted to each participant based on 1.0 contact hours of instruction toward credit.

This program is co-sponsored by ASCLS-WI which is approved as a provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E. program.
