WCLN Webinar – Gender and Anatomy in STD Testing
February 15, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Gender and Anatomy in STD Testing
Presenter:
- Alana Sterkel, Ph.D., D(ABMM), SM(ASCP)CM, is the Associate Director of the Communicable Disease Division of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene
Description of Session:
The landscape of gender identity is a fluid and evolving cultural phenomenon. Strict gender norms from the past no longer apply today. The increasing use of non-traditional gender identities impacts our ability to provide equitable medical services. Many diagnostic tests and electronic medical record systems require specific gender information, particularly when it comes to STD testing. In this webinar we will discuss the regulatory limitations gender language imposes and some alternate approaches that can help to address these issues. We will also cover the impacts gender reassignment surgery has on the microbiome, genital health risks, and diagnostic testing.
A certificate of participation will be granted to each participant based on 1.0 contact hours of instruction toward credit.
This program is sponsored by the WSLH, which is an approved provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E. program.
