Bacteria Culture
Culture and enumeration of the bacteria present to genus level.
Tryptic soy agar used. Other media available for pathogenic, mycobacterium and thermophilic actinomycetes.
Analysis can be from air, bulk or surface samples. Media, sterile containers and swabs are available from the laboratory.
All bacteria can be identified to the species level for an additional charge.
BACTERIA
Actinomycetes | Found in soil, on surfaces of vegetation, water, composts and water. Most are mesophilic; some are thermophilic. |
Bacillus species | Primarily saprophytes. Widely distributed in manure, particularly in soil, water and on materials of plant and animal origin. |
Corynebacterium species | Found in the soil, surface of plants, food, skin and mucous membranes of mammals. |
Gram negative bacteria | Vast number of species in this classification. Found in water, soil, intestinal flora of mammals. Produce endotoxin. |
Micrococcus species | Ubiquitous. Common on skin, in soil, water. |
Mycobacterium species | Soil, water, plants and house dust. |
Staphylococcus species | Common inhabitants of the human skin and mucous membranes. |
Streptococcus species | Human skin. |
Thermophilic actinomycetes | Cause of Farmer’s Lung. Found in closed barns, silos, grain mills and poorly maintained air conditioning ducts. |
